Toyota’s Fall Continues
by Larry LubellIt is amazing how quickly an auto company can go from the envy of the industry to a company sliding down a sink-hole.
Toyota Motors had enjoyed two dozen years of awards, and built a solid reputation on quality. Clearly the past year has been a parade of one problem after another, each different, yet each bound by a perception that Toyota has not been “leveling” with the public. While the American consumer will forgive some mistakes and flaws; we have little tolerance for companies that we conclude have been untruthful, particularly when safety is concerned.
Toyota this past year has recalled more than 10 million cars worldwide. The list of problems include faulty gas pedals, miss installed and poorly designed floor mats that have at times trapped accelerators resulting in cars that run out of control. The Prius has had braking problems, now Toyota has been forced to recall over one Million Corolla and Matrix cars from the 2005-2008, because their engines may stall, such stalls have been accused of result ling in accidents.
This just one more example of not just a string of quality issues, but of the danger of not getting out in front of a potential PR nightmare. As Nixon found out, the Cover-up is worse than the crime.
