Superman come to Metropolis.
We all know that Superman was born on the planet Krypton, and sent to Earth as a new-born, in an attempt to save his son from what his scientist father Jor-El understood was the quickly coming destruction of their home planet. We know the story of the safe crash landing of the small craft, and the ”Salt-of-the-Earth” Kent’s, who found it contained a small child, and reared him as the child they had always wanted. He grew-up on this small Kansas farm, going to school, helping with the chores and being a loving son to the Kent’s. Day by day it began to increasingly apparent that he was not “Just another boy” as his powers began to slowly reveal themselves. Reaching manhood Clark Kent finds this “Crystal” that helps to reveal his true background and recognized that his powers must be used use for the benefit of all humanity. The tale is as American, and well known as any of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin or Abraham Lincoln. But many don’t know the story and it’s cast was created by two teenaged recent Jewish immigrants, Jerry Siegel and Shuster in 1932 while both were living in Cleveland, The story has proven so popular that nearly 70 yrs later the comic is still ongoing, and has been the basis for TV shows, Radio programs and of course movies.Chicago becomes Metropolis for the filming of Director: Zack Snyder‘s film about the Man Of Steel.
Chicago played home to Gotham City, in Nolan’s Dark Knight. In that film, Chicago was pictured as a city of shadows. A collection of buildings, and streets that looked as if the MATRIX was shot in a Film Noir style. While artistically interesting, it was clearly not a city that made one think of long walks along the beach, or picnics in Grant Park.
All early indications are that Chicago AKA. Metropolis, will be a somewhat more livable city when “Superman” comes to town.
The Chicago Film Board is pleased to see the film, for which Warner Bros. has estimated will carry a budgetof $175 million, being shot largely in Chicago. Superman will join other recent blockbuster Pictures including “Transformers 3” and the last two Batman movies shot in Chicago in recent years. Now if we could just get a “Super-Hero” to actually admit to living in Chicago that would be fantastic.
