What is Bobtail Insurance?

Bobtail Insurance Illinois

Bobtail or Non-Trucking Liability policies are necessary coverage for Owner-Operators who are leased on to a carrier, use that companies ICC number, and whom that carrier, while delivering goods, loading and unloading, for the carrier covers you under their policy. Bobtail Insurance is coverage, which is designed to provide protection for your tractor, when you’re leased-onto a motor carrier, using their MC authority, but you’re not driving under dispatch. Here is where is pays to read your lease agreement carefully, the company your leased to covers you only for liability, and only when under dispatch. They DO NOT furnish liability protection when your tractor when it’s being operated without a trailer, home off duty, or getting the truck serviced. Bobtail Insurance fills in those gaps, guaranteeing you are always protected.
Bobtail insurance pays for damages the policyholder is legally required to pay because of bodily injury or property damage they caused to another person or property. It can also pay for damage to roadways and clean-up and towing expense as a result of an accident.

What about Physical Damage coverage for my truck?

Normally, the company your leased to covers you only for liability coverage, but does not provide Physical Damage coverage. That means that your tractor is out on the streets with no protection against fire, theft or collision. As an Owner operator you have a lot of money invested in your rig and can’t afford to fix or replace it without insurance. Urban Insurance offers Physical Damage coverage for your truck and we will search to find you the lowest rates. Physical Damage (Sometimes referred to as Full Coverage) protects your tractor regardless whether you’re under company dispatch or not. Keep in mind, if your truck is financed, your “Loss Payee” (the people to whom you make your monthly payments) will demand to see proof that the truck is covered for both Non-Trucking Liability and Physical Damage coverage. Urban will provide the finance company for your truck, a certificate of proof confirming that you’re fully protected, and listing them as Loss-Payee.

If I operate under m own ICC Authority, can I still get Bobtail?

The simple one word answer is NO! If you have your own MC Number, require and ICC filing or DOT number, then you must get Primary Liability. Bobtail insurance will not cover you or your business while you are pulling a loaded trailer, nor will it satisfy the insurance requirements needed to keep your ICC authority. You will need to purchase primary insurance with limits of not less than $750,000 CSL. If you are leased to a carrier they often will list you under their liability policy, if not, or if you have your own authority, then you must obtain the coverage, one way or another, someone is always paying for primary Liability.
