Chicago will see Wind chill temperatures reach such dangerously low levels that simple everyday tasks hold the potential to lead to life-threatening situations. It is vital to realize, that with such extreme conditions, frostbite injuries can occur in less than 10 minutes. While any exposed skin is particularly prone to frostbite, feet, hands, and ears can suffer damage even when covered.
These are the signs of frostbite, according to the CDC:
- A white or grayish-yellow skin area
- Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy
- Numbness
Keep in mind; because frozen tissues are numb, it is very possible to be unaware of frostbite until someone else sees you and expresses their concern. It is important that we all look out after each other, as well as use common sense when spending time in sub-zero temperatures.
In addition to Frostbite, hypothermia can also be life-threatening. We are a warm-blooded species with a normal temperature of 98.6, if one’s number falls below 96 degrees, that must be treated as a serious condition requiring medical help.
There are also grave risks that stem from people turning to alternative methods to heat and or supplement the heat in their homes. Fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are the most common risks of people using unapproved heating elements. When driving, remember people will be walking with limited disability; so it is critical to drive slowly and with greater caution.
All Chicago Public Schools will be closed Wednesday due to the impending freezing temps.
CPS CEO Dr. Janice Jackson said “Student safety is their top priority, and the expected temperature drop could present a hazard for students.
“Due to the extreme temperatures, it is in the best interest of our students’ health and safety to cancel all classes and school activities on Wednesday,” she said in a statement.”
With Chicago Wind chill at dangerously low levels, try to do as many tasks from your home, and check the if the location is even open before braving the elements.
