In Chicago, there were over 7,000 thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in 2022, according to data from the Illinois
Secretary of State, reported by CBS Chicago. The thefts account for 10% of all registered Kias and 7% of all registered
Hyundais in the city. Chicago is by no means alone, cities, both large and small, all across the country have seen these
cars targeted resulting in massive increases of stolen cars. The exploding number of thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles
has caused insurance carriers to either add large surcharges, or worse yet, refuse to write them altogether.

The rise in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles

Many of us hoped that with all of the attention and pressure being focused on the brands to find a software fix or recall
and replace the ignitions on the 2011-2021 models; but that has not happened. In fact Chicago Police have stated that
44% of all vehicles stolen in 2023 have been either a Hyundai or Kia. The reason why these two car brands are targeted
is due to their lack a device called a standard immobilizer.

Chicago is not alone; Los Angeles saw thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles increase by 85% last year, while Minneapolis
experienced an increase of 893%. This is a part of a nationwide trend has led to many insurance companies to add
surcharges for effected years and models, while others, including Progressive and State Farm, are refusing to insure
Kia and Hyundai models entirely*.
